Abortion, Libertarianism, and Evictionism: a Last Word
نویسنده
چکیده
I intend the present paper to be my last word1 in the debate I have been having with Walter Block (2010, 2011a, 2011b) on the subject of evictionism as an alleged libertarian “third way,” capable of transcending the familiar “pro-life” and “pro-choice” dichotomy. In this debate, I myself defended what might be regarded as a qualified “pro-life” position, while Block consistently argued for his view that the mother is morally allowed to expel the fetus from her womb provided that no non-lethal methods of its eviction are available.

Rejoinder to Block ’ S Defense of Evictionism
I AM THANKFUL TO WALTER BLOCK (2010) for his comprehensive and perspicacious engagement with my critical remarks regarding his theory of evictionism (Wisniewski 2010). I also appreciate his kind words about what he sees as the merits and strong points of my argumentation. However, as one could easily surmise from my decision to write this rejoinder, I found his defense of evictionism unconvinci...

Despite the millenniums-old tradition in Abrahamic circles of removing the foreskin of a penis at birth, the involuntary and aggressive practice of circumcision must not be made an exception to the natural, negative right to self-ownership—a birthright which should prevent a parent from physically harming a child from the moment of birth going forward. This paper will present a natural rights a...
متن کاملRaymond Aron and the Intellectuals: Arguments Supportive of Libertarianism
“INTELLECTUALS . . . SEEK NEITHER TO understand the world nor to change it, but to denounce it,” so wrote Raymond Aron (1983, p. 158) in a damning critique of those who were very much his intellectual kindred. Such a sentiment may at first seem surprising since Aron was, after all, a Marxist scholar and lifelong socialist who felt comfortable with the social welfare states prevalent in postwar ...
متن کاملOn Making an Effort
This paper is in the main a critical study of Robert Kane’s account of the nature of Free Choice. I begin by briefly describing Kane’s theory. I then consider four questions about a concept that is central to his account—viz., the concept of an Effort of Will. I argue that Kane’s position affords satisfactory answers to three of these questions. Reflection on the fourth and final question, howe...
